You can call anywhere in the US for as little as3.5 cents per minute. I don't use long distance that much, but . . . I decided to try it out and jumped online at http://www.costco.com to make the purchase. I entered my membership number, purchased a prepaid card, and eagerly awaited its arrival. I could have saved the $2.50 shipping cost and purchased the card at their local store, but you may not be so fortunate . . . Just 3 days later, the card arrived in the mail. It's a great deal and works wonderfully - we do however, offer the following suggestions and tips. 1) Don't use it for short duration calls. To initiate a call, you first dial its toll-free number, then press 1 for English, then dial a 10-digit PIN number, and finally dial the telephone number you're looking to call. That's a big hassle if you're calling a friend for a minute or two to save a few pennies. 2) You can't use the prepaid card to place 700, 900, or 976 number calls. So if you want to call psychic Ms. Cleo, you're out of luck. You'll need to use your current long distance provider. (You may also need an attorney from what they are saying on the news). 3) You can refill your card anytime, but to protect your card from theft, you can only refill it 3 times within a 168-hour period. And you determine the refill amount... from $5 to $100... billable to your credit card. 4) You can use the card for calls anywhere around the world (international calls cost you more... USA to Germany is 12 cents a minute... USA to Canada is 9 cents a minute.) 5) Calls placed from pay phones set you back an additional flat 24 cents plus 3.48 cents a minute. But the good news is you can place multiple calls (don't hang up... instead press the # key twice and dial your number) without paying the surcharge for each call. 6) If you've got a phone system that lets you speed dial and add time pauses, you can automate the initial procedure. Once you dial the toll-free number to access the system, you'll need to pause your speed dial for 7 seconds, have it press the number 1 key, pause for 1 second, then dial your PIN number. You can't enter one long string of numbers. 7) Don't even think about canceling the long distance service you currently have... I understand during peak times it can be difficult to access their system. 8) If you're NOT a member of Costco, that's okay... you can be a guest and pay a 5% surcharge on all orders. So the $19.99 prepaid phone card costs you an extra buck. The team led by Bruce Ames, University of California, Berkeley, professor of molecular and cell biology, fed older rats two chemicals found in body cells and on store shelves. They are acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid, an anti- oxidant. Their surprising effect was reported in three articles in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The rats did better on memory tests and showed more pep. There was also improved function in the energy- producing organelles in their cells. “With the two supplements together, these old rats got up and did the Macarena," said Ames, also a researcher at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute. "The brain looks better, they are full of energy -- everything we looked at looks more like a young animal." "The animals seem to have much more vigor and are much more active than animals not on this diet, signaling massive improvement to these animals' health and well-being," said Tory Hagen, now assistant pro- fessor at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University in Corvallis. "And we also see a reversal in loss of memory. That is a dual-track improvement that is significant and unique. This is really starting to explode and move out of the realm of basic research into people." ___________________________________ Here's This Issue's Bar Bet Olive In Brandy Snifter. You Will Need: 1 olive and 1 brandy snifter. The Bet: Put olive in brandy snifter. But . . . You can not touch the olive with your body (hands, mouth, etc.). You can not scoop the olive with the snifter. You can not roll olive off of bar into snifter. You cannot use any other implement other than the brandy snifter. Solution: With the olive on the bar. Place the brandy snifter over the olive so that the open end of the snifter is surrounding the olive. Slowly rotate the brandy snifter around the olive. The olive will roll around the inside walls of the snifter (centrifugal force). Once the olive is spinning around the middle of the snifter. Flip the snifter upright and place on the bar. Collect your winnings! Hints: Practice this bar trick before placing any bets. The olive has a tendency to come out of snifter when flipping upright.
